De Lancre was able to extract various descriptions from his suspects of the Devil’s penis: it was as long as an alder bush, though twisted and wound up like a snake; it was half as long as an alder bush, of modest size, red, dark, twisted, very stiff and pointy at the tip; whether appearing as a man or a goat, the Devil’s penis was like a mule’s, long and as big as an arm; it was one half iron, and the other half flesh, all along its length; or it was made out of horn which was why women screamed so. . . . Johannés d’Aguerre, de Lancre tells us, said that the Devil, appearing as a billy-goat, had his penis attached to his backside and that he would have sex with the women by moving and pushing it against their bellies. Marie de Marigrane, 15 years old, living in Biarritz, said that she had frequently seen the Devil have sex with a great many women. She said that, typically, he had sex with the pretty ones from the front and with the ugly ones from behind.
